The challenge

Tim Watson is the Director of Sunland Agriculture, an Australian agricultural company specialising in irrigated cropping. His property is located on the Bellarine Peninsula, about five kilometres from Point Lonsdale. The site is in a windy position, on top of a hill, overlooking the bay. It includes a newly built family home and a large storage shed.

After building the shed, Tim considered installing solar panels on the roof. And then when he was part way through the build of his new home, he decided it would be a good idea to include solar panels on that roof too.

However, the roof of the shed is quite steep, which presented a challenge to fit the required 20kW system. Conversely, the house has a flat roof, and Tim didn’t want those panels to be visible from the ground.

Fortunately, Tim contacted City to Surf Solar, following recommendations from his electrician, and from his building contractor, Spence Construction. Our solutions specialist, Raj Nawaratna, responded quickly with an affordable solution that met Tim’s needs

Our solution

We installed two separate 20kW solar systems, one on Tim’s shed and one on his home. Each system includes 40 SunPower Performance Panels, a Fronius Primo String Inverter, and a Fronius 3-Phase Energy Meter.

City to Surf Solar managed the entire process, including Tim’s application for a government rebate. We also provided a diagram of the roof configuration, and the anticipated results from our solution.

The result

Tim’s house is large, and fully powered by electricity, including underfloor heating. So solar was a logical solution to lower Tim’s energy costs and reduce his impact on the environment.

Tim was delighted with the outcome. By reconfiguring the layout, we were able to fit the large 20kW system on Tim’s shed, and we also ensured the house panels were not visible, improving the aesthetics of Tim’s home.

Customer Feedback

“We’ve installed solar systems before, so I’m familiar with what a good install looks like,” said Tim. “I’m really pleased with the quality of work and attention to detail. We didn’t want the house panels to be visible, so we asked the guys if they could install them flat, and they were happy to do it. I’ve already recommended City to Surf to a couple of my neighbours.”
